20 March, 2003Underwriters Laboratories accreditation benefits NZ manufacturersUnderwriters Laboratories has been accepted into the test data acceptance programme of the VDE Testing and Certification Institute of Germany, enabling local electrical and electronics manufacturing companies to gain the prestigious VDE Safety Mark on products being exported to European markets. Underwriters started investigating participation in the scheme after a major local whiteware manufacturer asked the laboratory to assist them in gaining VDE marking for products for their German distributors. Marketing Director Matt Toohey and Managing Director Manuel Shimasaki travelled to Germany and entered into negotiations with VDE last year. Underwriters was then visited by a VDE Executive who rigorously assessed the capabilities of Underwriters Laboratories before advising of its acceptance into the programme. Mr Toohey said Underwriters were very happy and proud that VDE, one of the oldest Electrical testing institutions in the world, has given its stamp of approval to Underwriters's testing. VDE marking offers ready acceptance of products exported into European markets without supplementary and often expensive testing in overseas markets. "We anticipate that many manufacturers will take advantage of the opportunities offered through the VDE marking of their products", he said. Mr Toohey said that the Underwriters was firmly focussed on assisting New Zealand's high-tech manufacturers to overcome non-tariff trade barriers by providing product certification that allowed products to be exported globally. "We have one of the widest accredited scopes of operation available in Australasia and our acceptance into the VDE programme complements our current accreditations", Mr Toohey said. Underwriters is an internationally accredited laboratory offering independent product testing and certification services to consultants, end-users, designers and manufacturers of electrical and electronic products in various technology fields. The laboratory's services include electrical and electronic testing and certification, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) testing, environmental testing, energy meter certification, calibration, precision dimensional and volumetric measurement, a consultancy service for approvals of electrical and electronic products, a product development service and CE marking.
